(Creating Rows)

Your first blank document has a single empty row of text in the outline. Enter some text there, and press <strong>Return</strong> when you're finished to create a new row below the selected one.

(Adding Structure)

Press <strong>Tab</strong> with a row selected to indent it, turning it into a child of the previous row (press <strong>Shift-Tab</strong> to outdent and restore its position). Add as many levels of hierarchy as you need to bring the desired structure to your outline.

(Organizing Content)

Click the disclosure triangle next to a row in the outline to collapse or expand its contents. Drag the row handle (either a triangle or a bullet) to move a row and any of its children elsewhere in the outline.

Click <strong>Add Column</strong> in the Toolbar to create a new column to the right of the outline. If the column is for a specific type of data, right-click the column header to choose a format relevant to the data type.

Click <strong>Theme</strong> in the Toolbar to choose a set of styles for your entire outline from a collection of existing document themes.

(Editing Styles)

Click the <strong>Styles</strong> tab in the Sidebar (second from the left) to see a list of style presets applicable to various aspects of the outline. The default template includes several existing Document Styles (starting with Whole Document at the top) that are applied as you add content to the outline.

Select a style in the Sidebar to edit it (rows it affects will be highlighted in the outline). Open the Inspector (<strong>View &#9656; Show Inspector</strong>, or click <strong>Inspect</strong> in the Toolbar) and make any changes you like. Changes made to style attributes in the Inspector affect the selected style preset.

(Applying Named Styles)

With anything selected in the outline, click the checkbox next to a Named Style (the lower grouping of styles in the Styles tab of the sidebar) to apply that preset style to the selection.

As with Document Styles, Named Styles can be edited by selecting the style and changing its attributes with the Inspector.

(Focusing on Content)

Click the leftmost tab in the sidebar to see the <strong>Sections List</strong>, a hierarchical summary of your outline. Click a section to select and Focus on it, hiding all rows but the selection and any children it has. (Choose <strong>View &#9656; Focus</strong> (Shift-Command-F) with rows selected in the outline for the same effect.)

Click Unfocus in the bar above the outline (or press Shift-Command-F) to restore the full outline view.

(Filtering Content)
[corresponding illustration: oo5mac_QuickstartPro10.gif]

Use the <strong>Search</strong> field in the Toolbar for a quick keyword filter of the outline. With a filter applied, rows without the keyword text are hidden.

The filter is applied dynamically to your outline as you change the keyword text in the search field. Click the X to the right of the field to dismiss it.

(Saving a Filter)
[corresponding illustration: oo5mac_QuickstartPro11.png]

Click the Magnifying Glass in the Search field and choose <strong>Save as Filter</strong> to create a saved filter based on a search keyword. Saved filters can be reapplied from the <strong>Filters</strong> tab of the sidebar.

A bar above the outline notes when a saved filter is in use, and provides options to refresh the filter (based on edits made to the outline after the filter was applied) or dismiss it, returning all rows to view.

(Editing a Filter)

Select a filter in the Sidebar and click the sidebar's <strong>Gear</strong> menu to edit it, with options to add more complex filtering criteria. Or, use the <strong>New Filter</strong> button to set up a new filter from scratch.
